I saw your utube video. I go to storage unit auctions myself.I also rent a unit 10×10 cost $128 A month. I live here in california. I seen big time dealers go to these auctions spending anywhere from A $1,000 to $2500 .I know in Los Angeles county there is a lot of competion out here. The only problem I have is if I win A unit I will have to haul it all away and finding space to put this stuff at. I seen some crazy stuff in these units. I can’t believe some of the stuff people pay to store.I been to some in Long Beach, California All I saw was a bunch of junk there. The storage manager was a real jerk there never went back there. I also tend to yard sales as well.
William,
Thanks for checking the YouTube video out I have heard the auctions in California were crazy! We have junk in GA but we have good too! I did it full time and attend anywhere from three to five different auction per week every week and even some on Saturday. It is all about the numbers, my good man. How long have you been in the business?
I have to admit it but i have found Many of those items in Units. Some have litterally been someones Entire Household or life.Irreplaceable stuff.
Dude it is literally trash to treasure in this business, but some trash can make you some cash!
LMAO!! I was a mover for 18 yrs, practically raised my family with that job up here in Philly,I can’t beleive that I never heard of this until I saw the preview for Storage Wars. Now I’m in the union trades for 7 yrs. Upside: Making way more MONEY working 40 hrs a week, WAY better benefits. Downside: When the economy crashed I was out of work for 13 months, then got the call to report back to work MAKING THAT GOOD MONEY AGAIN. Well that was short lived, 8 months later job winding down I’m out of work again since Thanksgiving eve and that’s around the time I saw that preview. Well I started researching storage auctions this weekend on youtube and ran across your pages, I want to buy your book but I also want too try it on my own merit to see how I do or if it’s for me, (I have a list of auctions to go to this week and my budget is $700.00) and if it’s for me, what is the name of your first book? ANY comments or input on how to, I guess get the best bang for my budget or any feed back is GREATLY appreciated!
Darryl,
You definitely want to make sure the business is for you, before making any significant investments! I say go to the auctions and watch for a while. I will say this, the climate is waaaaaaaaaay more competitive now, you will need to be smarter than the average bear! Good luck my dude!
I have bought units with some of this stuff. Expired drivers license, expired credit cards, checkbooks, and even letters from prison.
HamJunk your blog is nice. The blog you get with the next button is pretty cool too.
Thanks Peter! Nice to know someone out there is enjoying it.
Hey Glendon,
Chalk me up as one of those who have been thinking of doing this for a long time. Well I discovered your You Tube page, the rest is history. It may sound lame but you have inspired me to quit thinking and start doing. I’m going to my first auction on Thursday, only two units are up but its my first time out. I’m going to use your advice and watch how things go down. I’ll try to be patient but if a unit is going to go cheep how could I not bid
. I haven’t gotten your book yet but your three book deal is calling my name. I have also started reading the 48 laws (library had it).
There is nothing to it but to do it, sometimes you have to step out on faith! Thanks for watching the videos and checking out the blog!
I live in Central California and have been buying storage auctions for 7 years; I know people who have done it for 20 years. Since the auction shows have come on tv the crowds have increased and at an auction where formerly (5 years ago) there were 15 people (we all knew each other) to 2 years ago when the crowed jumped to 30 people, NOW there are 75 to 100 “bidders” and the original 15 of us who have known each other for years. A month ago (Dec, 2010) the newbies weren’t buying, but they are starting to and yes, most are making big mistakes. At an auction where a 5×5 unit containing nothing but good looking cardboard boxes WOULD HAVE brought $150/$200 3 to 6 months ago, it brought over $800. I talked to the guy later…it was his first auction buy. Be interesting to see how he did ! I thought it would only take a few months for this to blow over, but now I am thinking (with tax refunds coming in) it may be this summer (2011) before it dies down. If nothing else, the summer heat working in those lockers will knock off a few, and after spending a couple of grand on 3 or 4 lockers and only selling $1k out of them and junking the rest, some will learn their lessons. I’ve bought over 300 lockers in 7 years, so I have a pretty good idea about the business.
Believe me, TONS of new people will now start showing up at those storage bin auctions. Plus the folks that were doing the auctions will be cursing out that show for bringing in all those newbie bidders that will do nothing but cause the bid prices to skyrocket. Also a lot of newbies get “auction fever.” They will bid way beyond the value. I saw this happen a lot at the L.A. police auction. Auction fever folks would bid almost a couple of hundred bucks for a crappy TV. I asked one of the winners why he paid so much and he told me he couldn’t let someone else outbid him. DUmb!
Yes, that is happening but it will be short lived ( however long that is) people in this country are allergic to hard work ( and studying for that matter) there are plenty of jobs for math, science, etc degreed folks. I have a friend who has an engineering firms he has (16) 65-120K a year jobs open!
Seems like a lot of people are going to be looking for a quick cash route and try and buy these units ever since those shows started on tv. But what I have noticed from watching those shows is that they never show the bad stuff. They always only show the really good things you will find. On average though you do make money right?
I’ve been storage auction buyer for about 8 years now. Storage Wars is a JOKE. Sure you get some valuable items from time to time but the show does not tell you about the dirty diapers, rat droppings, 17-hour days, costly dump runs for the literal trash, flat tires from nails in the storage facility or the dump, and the list goes on…but most of all…the HARD PHYSICAL WORK. It is a lifestyle built on faith and if you dont have it, turn the other way, its not for you. Dont waste you time, your gas or your money.
Yes, you can make money but I can almost guarantee you it will not happen overnight and you will throw a lot of money away before you learn how to “buy smart”. My first locker was a 10×20 with the entire household in it for just $225. I made about $5,000 and was hooked. That same locker today will cost you about $2500-3000. Sad, but true.
Oh, and there is one other “reality” they do not tell you and it happened to me…if you intend to do this for a living, you can end up homeless. There are NO guarantees in the business.
so, I have come to the experts…
I have a storage unit in Wisconsin that I have had for 11 years. I now live in GA and am trying to decide if it is worth anything to go get the stuff or just to leave it. My question: In your opinion do boxes and furniture keep after 11 years in an storage unit. The unit was not temperature controlled.
I am scared to even open the door for the bugs, spiders…etc? Anyone have any experience with stuff in storage for a long time…what is it like when you open that door?//
any help would be greatly appreciated…thanks!
There are several aspects of that, first and foremost if you do not go get it, and your unit goes up for auction, they will put the delinquency on your credit report which could drop your score 150-200 points! So if you want it gone, make the proper arrangements with the company. Tell them they can have it or pay to have it hauled off. The second part, after 11 years in a non climate control unit ( ???) a lot of bad things can happen!
The electronic ( which are dated) may or may not work, the furniture could have mold, the list is endlist! I suggest you go up there and check out the unit. Pull out what you deem as valuable and liquidate or donate the rest. I suggest this because chances are high you may have something really valuable in there that you forgot about! It happens frequently in this business!
The expense of hauling it back to GA would be in the $$$$$ and you sound like you do not want it now! Just some things to think about!
WOW, thanks for your help. I owe $2000.00 on the unit and have until the end of april to decide whether to pay the $2000. just to get in the unit or to let it go. Having a hard time deciding….
Believe me, i have learned so many lessons…no more storage units and no more missing monthly rents on anything…it adds up quick!
However, thanks for your help. It is definitely a tough decision.
Grew up going too regular farm auctions. Always wanted to get into storage auctions. Watched some of your you tube video’s and loved them. I’ve been too a couple of storage sales now and bought my first 2 lockers this past saturday and payed $175 for the first one had newer washer dryer, 2 tv’s, kitchen table and chairs new counter top dishwasher, WII game system and household figure $800 to $900 by the time everything sells Second locker paid 60 got a nice kitchen table and chairs, nice office chair, hair dressers chair, and junk 100 to 150 by the time everything sell’s. Up here in Ontario Canada the sells are not too often so this is more of a hobby but love it….. Good Luck On your Finds. Any Hints would be great Thanks Keith the rookie lol.
Thanks for checking out the videos dude!!
I am enjoying the videos and hope to try my first auction ASAP but am having a REALLY hard time locating the autions. I have found some online sites that say they have a list of local auction sites but charge a monthly fee, others state I have to look in my paper or call each and every unit and ask them when (and if) they are having an auction. I live in WA state and am thinking maybe there aren’t a ton of them here? Any tips on where to look?
